A publication by Maya de Wit, PhD

Sign Language Interpreting in Europe, 2026 edition gives an overview of the organizations, educational programs, and employment situations of sign language interpreters in Europe. First published in the year 2001, this year’s guide is the seventh updated edition.

Qualitative and quantitative survey data allows readers get a deeper understanding of the current situation in the field of sign language interpreting in Europe, make comparisons between individual countries, and to identify emerging trends.

New areas of focus are topics involving deaf interpreters, the impact of technology on the profession, and the functioning of national interpreters’ associations.

Sign Language Interpreting in Europe is based on a 2025 survey, held among national associations of sign language interpreters in European countries and regions. The findings of the survey were supplemented with information collected from several publications on sign language interpreting throughout Europe.

Maya de Wit is a certified Dutch Sign Language interpreter, RID certified ASL interpreter, and a WFD-WASLI accredited International Sign interpreter. Maya de Wit divides her time between interpreting, teaching, consultancy, and conducting research, believing that each activity contributes to the others.
